VOLUNTEER opportunities for the 8th Grade Bike Trip

Intersection Monitors (group leader Julia Gottlieb - jgottlieb@rsu21.net)

Intersection monitors keep our riders safe by communicating to vehicles about the presence of bikers and bikers about the presence of vehicles.  Most intersections require you to simply point riders in the correct direction while occasionally slowing vehicles down with gestures.  Intersections (A, B, D, F, O, P) involve tricky traffic situations and may be heavily traveled and therefore require volunteers for these intersections to have assertive personalities.  Choose an intersection from these maps before you sign up.

Water Stations Monitors (group leader Amy Panagakos apanagakos@rsu21.net)

Water station monitors keep our riders well hydrated and fueled up for the ride.  Responsibilities include passing out water and snacks.  In addition, water station volunteers must be comfortable in directing riders away from the road with their bikes when they stop AND assisting riders merging safely back onto the road.

Sag Van Drivers (group leader Craig Hemond chemond@rsu21.net)

Sag van drivers are the key to a safe ride for all.  You serve many roles: communicators, traffic notification and speed control, medical personnel transport, and transport of exhausted or injured riders.  You will need to be willing to drive your truck or van back and forth on a designated section of the course appropriately notifying and slowing vehicles with signs (provided) and with your flashers.  If you come across a student in need of help you may need to communicate with dispatch and/or transport the student and their bike.

First Aid Provider (group leader Craig Hemond chemond@rsu21.net)

We need several medically trained individuals to be available for riders in the event of injury.  You can be available anywhere along the course- in a sag van, at a water station or at an intersection.  Dispatch may call you to have you move to a rider in need.

Adult Biker (group leader Luke Howell lhowell@rsu21.net)

We will need at least 25 adult riders.  Adult riders responsibilities include: assisting with riding techniques (gear changing for example), checking in with students, reminding students to not ride alone or in “bunches”, act as first responders in events of injury or mechanical issues (call dispatch) and have fun with the kids of course!
